I'm leery about buying the rest of the books in this series. This book was good but it wasn't as great as it could be. Just didn't live up to my expectations. Jun 07, Mike rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-read-in This is a wonderfully written novel, by Tim LaHaye. He takes literary efforts to bring us a story of how John's life could have been, The last disciple of Jesus Christ, finished out his days. The story begins with John imprisoned and after being boiled in oil and surviving, the story takes you through his life as a teacher.
He mentors and keeps the church going while preaching to others of the time. The story takes place around 95 A. I highly recommend this ser This is a wonderfully written novel, by Tim LaHaye. I highly recommend this series, known as the Jesus Chronicles, which is a series of 4 books. Aug 08, Dempse Kb rated it liked it. I've read all four books in this series now, and I'm glad I did because while it was not the best of the bunch I really liked Matthew and Luke , it was very interested and still gave me a better understanding of why John waited so long to write his gospel.
Sure I could have read it on wiki but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as interesting. Tim LaHaye writes in a clear and accessible way that I appreciate when trying to grasp biblical concepts. Another great book that makes the scriptures come alive as they weave the story of John's perspective of the events he witnessed. Oct 01, Edwina Callan rated it it was amazing Shelves: , bookcrossing. Simply fascinating and highly recommended. Apr 11, Tjbrowne Browne rated it it was ok.
I am intrigued by the stories of the disciples, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief in the overly simplified characters. Jan 11, Julia Pope rated it it was amazing. What had me turning the pages: John's giving his accounts of the book of John, Revelation, and John when he is about to die, and his conflict with Cerinthus.
Most intriguing was when he recounted, via protege Polycard, what we know now as John We could go searching our whole lives for direction. But it will be a waste of time and energy when we don't have God. LaHaye and Jenkins both do a stellar job in the choice of vocabulary, what I consider, for a lack of better words, to be on a New King James Version level. It only makes me want to read the books they have written on Mark and Matthew. Last but not least, I loved how they made a point to emphasize that the book of John is about Jesus' miraculous signs, all of which still marveled John to his dying day.

Jan 19, Susan rated it liked it. John's Story is the first book in The Jesus Chronicles. It can be read as a standalone. It is an interesting mix of story and scripture. The last part of the book includes the New Testament books John wrote. My only complaint is that the authors did not include any sources for some of their story. So it is difficult for me to determine how much is based on historical facts and how much is just fiction.
Apr 28, Sandra Ziesmer rated it liked it. It can perhaps serve as a tool of evangelism and might attract readers who otherwise might not read the Bible. The story is taken mostly word for word from the pages of the Bible, and in addition, contains the Gospel of John, the 3 epistles of John, and the Book of Revelation in the back. I really wanted to like this book - the life of the apostle John has all the makings of a wonderful, inspiring story.
It took a lot of doing, but the authors have managed to make him a lifeless, cardboard character. Save time - just read the word of John in the back and skip the rest. I think I didn't enjoy this book because of a case of expectations vs reality -- I was expecting it to be more about John's real-time experience with Jesus rather than a real-time experience of writing his Gospel and Revelation, which I simply didn't find very compelling.
Nothing essentially wrong with this book, but then nothing essential about it at all. An easy read - just a few days - it won't have any insights into John's life, but will provide an easygoing narrative to the supposed musings of John. Jun 12, Fran Slone rated it it was amazing.
Excellent additional study of John. Oct 19, Rosealba J.

At first I thought, this is a great refresher. But toward the end, during the revelation I was in distress realizing what is yet to come. I hope knowing all of this makes me a better person. A good speculation of the apostle John's final years. Not as good as "Left Behind" but still a good book! Getting ready to read the rest of the series. Jun 13, Barbara Cook rated it really liked it. I love it because it is like the Bible book of John and Revelation.

Very good! Really brought the man and his writing to life. Feb 09, Brandi True rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this way of reading about John. I am not a theologist and find it difficult to keep some of the people from the Bible straight sometimes, even though I am not a baby Christian anymore! I find that a narrated story is a much simpler way for me to really learn and remember who the people of the Bible were and the lives they lived. Looking forward to another one! Nov 16, F.
